The governing body of Texas high school extracurricular academic, athletic and music activities, the University Scholastic League, has extended the suspension of any UIL sanctioned event, including contests, rehearsals, practices and games until it is deemed safe to resume them. The earliest that any contest or activity may start is May 4.
That would approximately a month for all high school sports and sanctioned activities to get finished before the end of the school year, unless that gets extended due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
The UIL did state that all schools would be allowed a "reasonable acclimatization period" for practices and rehearsals before resuming activities.
“We are working diligently on contingency plans to conduct state championships in each of the activities that have been suspended.
“While the immediate future is unclear, we are committed to providing these much-desired activities to all Texas students and will prepare for all possible outcomes, including extended school closures,” UIL Executive Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt said.
Bandera has some athletes that qualified for state in powerlifting, both girls and boys, and the spring sports, baseball, softball, tennis and track have been affected by the shutdown.
If things do get fired up on May 4, it is going to be a job to finish the season and playoffs for baseball and softball, to get to the state finals in track and tennis as well as finish the boys basketball state championships that was cut short right in the middle of their playoffs.
