Lakehills Library Leanings
By Vicki L. George
The Bandera Prophet
There is good news from the Lakehills Area Library. They have worked out an agreement with Ancestry.com to provide their genealogy service for free to card-carrying library members from the library’s website during July and August.
Previously the Ancestry site could only be accessed from the library itself and the Genealogy Group paid the annual fee so the public could use that for family tree research.
The fee is due soon and the Genealogy Group is unable to have the annual fundraiser to pay the fee.
The library director called Ancestry and arranged to have the link put on the library website. It will require a library card to access it and those cards are free and available at the library.
To access Ancestry, go to lakehillslibrary.org and click on the Catalog link at the top of the page. A new tab will open with the catalog on it. Enter your library card number, and your phone number as your password. Scroll down the left hand column, with the list of the online resources and Ancestry should be at the bottom of the list. Just click on Ancestry and you are there.
Ancestry will still be available from the library itself.
The annual fee for the library to provide Ancestry for our community is $1,400. Without the annual fundraiser, the Genealogy Group needs the help of the community. If anyone wishes to help the group, they are invited to donate any amount to the Lakehills Area Library and be sure to note that the money is for Ancestry.
The library is open and will allow 10 patrons at a time to enter the library. Everyone over the age of 2 years must wear a face mask and may enter between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. The last hour of the day is for library cleaning.
In addition, there will be no seating available. Only two computers will be available and limited to one-hour use per patron and they ask that your reserve your time for the computer. Social distancing is requested.
The Summer Reading Program has been very successful, with about 50 youngsters participating every week. It is still on-going and will last until the end of July.
Director Dianna Landes reads to the youngsters via YouTube. There are two new videos each week, one where Landes will read stories aloud, and one that has the instructions for the crafts that the children will make. Parents will go online to YouTube.com and do a search for Lakehills Area Library. All the videos will be there.
Parents may still call, email or stop by the library now to register for the rest of the Summer Reading Program. They need to know how many kiddos and their ages so that they can make up To Go bags with the craft materials for each child, each week. The parents will need to pick up the summer reading logs and bags at the library each week and one of the staff can hand them through the door.
For those who don’t feel comfortable entering the library, the director reminds us that the free WiFi is still available in the parking lot. If someone needs a computer, one of the staff can bring a laptop out to the table by the front door to use.
The staff is still there to take care of copying, printing, faxing, and notarizing inside or at the door. Library card holders can reserve books and DVDs online at the website, or by phone, and pick them up at the library inside or at the door. Returned items may be placed in the book return bin outside. Patrons can call with requests for information, items and services. By calling the library, a newcomer can be given a library card.
Library cards are free and borrowing books and DVDs cost nothing. Printing and copying cost 15 cents a page and faxing costs $1 a page. Director Dianna Landes is a Notary and can notarize documents for $4.
They can also bring out a selection of books for a patron to choose from and check out the ones to take home and read.
The library’s hours are Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is located at 7200 FM 1283 and the phone number is 830-510-2777. The email address is [email protected]. Their website is lakehillslibrary.org.
