Changes seemingly a constant for Texas high school sports

Coaches and band directors all over the state will soon be back to working those 80-plus hour weeks and most, if not all, are looking forward to it.
With the guidelines sent out by the University Interscholastic League (UIL) earlier this week, school districts can finally plan for their upcoming seasons, well almost.
With the rise and fall of the number of CoVid-19 cases, it is inevitable that all current scheduling is of a fluid nature and can be altered at any minute but the most obvious thing about the UIL mandate is that 1A through 4A schools may start practices over a month ahead of larger 5A and 6A schools.
At the moment, Bandera ISD won’t see many changes and can still start practices on Aug. 3 for football and volleyball, with volleyball allowed to start interschool competition on Aug. 10. Fall tennis and cross-country can start on Aug. 17 and football has to wait until Aug. 27.
The larger 5A and 6A schools can’t start practicing football or volleyball until Sept. 7, but the tennis and cross-country teams can start competitions on that date. Volleyball has to wait until Sept. 14, and football will have to wait another 10 days until Sept. 27.
The late start for the larger schools accelerates the tennis and cross-country state championship contests to coincide with the smaller schools championships, and volleyball is actually scheduled the weekend before the 1A – 4A championships. Football state title games however will be delayed into January 2021 with the dates still TBD.
Bandera ISD Athletic Director Joel Fontenot-Amedee hinted that there were already changes in the Bulldogs football schedule with cancellations, replacements and moving opponents to different Fridays on the new, work in progress, schedule which is below.
The new schedule does have six home games as of the date of this story and as it is home and home, Bulldog fans can count on the same number of road trips next season.
“The grind starts now and I can’t wait,” Fontenot-Amedee said.
High school marching bands are on the same schedule regardless of their classification with a Sept. 7 debut date and a TBD December date for their state championships.
Remember, all this can change before the seasons start so make sure those plans to support your local teams are marked tentative.
