Bandera drops season opener to Poteet, 36-0

The Bandera Prophet
"This is a wakeup call!.. We have a lot of time to fix things, we are not there yet, but we will get there," Bandera Defensive Coordinator Manny Martinez said after the 36-0 loss to the Poteet Aggies Friday night.
Expectations were high just three hours before with the Bulldogs coming off their best season in a decade, but things weren't meant to be Friday night.
Bandera graduated 15 seniors last year, so many of their players were untested and in their first varsity game. In contrast, the Aggies only lost four from last year's playoff team, so many of them had lots of varsity experience.
That experience became evident as Poteet scored six unanswered touchdowns on the night, one in the first, third and fourth quarters with a three score run in the second quarter.
Penalties were rampant in the early part of both halves, killing momentum on both sides of the ball, and fumbles and interceptions also stopped a few scoring chances for both teams.
In spite of the score, Bandera did have some high points on the night.
Freshman RB Jesse Cardenas just missed a milestone, rushing for 97 yards on 18 carries in his first ever varsity contest to lead the team in yardage and carries. David Guerra forced a fumble, recovered a fumble and had an interception for the game, and Bandera stopped Poteet on four different two point attempts.
The Bulldogs do have some work to do over the next two weeks in preparation for their next game.
On the offensive side, the Bulldogs only had 50 snaps and 173 yards of total offense against Poteet, so they have got to cut out the penalties and turnovers and get the ball into the red zone on a consistent basis.
Defensively, reads and most importantly, tackling, will be paramount to keeping the 'Jackets out of the end zone.
"The bell has been rung and we are going to see who is going to answer that bell. This is not our brand of football on either side of the ball," Martinez said in closing.
Bandera will be back in action at Bulldog Stadium on Friday, Sept. 11, at 7:30 p.m. when they host the Llano Yellowjackets.
Never forget!
