Book some time at the Bandera Library
By Mauri Guillén Fagan
Bandera Library Director
The Bandera Library is pleased to announce that we are the recipients of a Texas Book Festival Grant for 2020. The Texas Book Festival gives away about $100,000 every year to Texas libraries needing to grow their collection. The Bandera Library received a grant for $2,500 to purchase books on agriculture, farm animal care and homesteading. Keep an eye out for new titles on beekeeping, chickens, composting, even butchering. The library would like to thank the Texas Book Festival for helping us develop our non-fiction section.
As a reminder, Monday, Sept. 7, is Labor Day and the library will be closed. We hope everyone enjoys their day off. The library board is currently recruiting for new board members. Those interested can submit an application either in person or online.
New titles to hit the shelves this week are “Comanche” by Brett Riley, “Chaos” by Iris Johansen and “All the Devils are Here” by Louise Penny.
Brett Riley’s new book is a western horror thriller all wrapped into one. Back in 1887, near a small town in Texas called Comanche, a group of vigilantes ambushes the notorious murderer known as The Piney Woods Kid. Gripped by bloodlust, the group goes beyond justice hacking the body of The Kid to bits near the train depot. Fast forward to 2016, the police of Comanche are flabbergasted by a double murder in their sleepy town. Witnesses swear that the killer was dressed like an old timey gunslinger. Immediately rumors spread that the ghost of the Piney Woods Kid is back for revenge on the descendants of his killers. While help does come in the form of a team of New Orleans investigators, the townsfolk distrust them as outsiders. It doesn’t take long for the investigators to find themselves in the crosshairs.
“Chaos” by Iris Johansen introduces a new character : Alisa Flynn, CIA agent who is constantly pushing the envelope. Flynn would even be willing to go rouge if it meant catching the criminals she’s after. Alisa gets help from billionaire-genius Gabe Korgan and Margaret Douglas who is an animal whisperer. The three must work together to rescue a group of school-age girls from their boarding school in Africa.
In “All the Devils are Here,” Chief Inspector Armand Gamache is back in Paris with his family. After a dinner with his godfather, billionaire Stephen Horowitz, Gamache is horrified when his elderly godfather is pushed down and gravely injured. The Chief Inspector knows this was no accident, but a deliberate attempt on the man’s life. Things only begin to get even hairier, when a strange key is sent to Gamache and his wife. Before long, the entire family is caught in a tangle of secrets and lies with his godfather in the center.
The Bandera Library is open by appointment only and masks are required. Appointments are available Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Happy tales, y’all.
