The latest at the Bandera Library

The Bandera Library is pleased to announce the featured artist in the library’s art gallery is Native American artist Dennis Eagle Horse. Three paintings by Dennis Eagle Horse titled “Twin Warriors”, “Re-envisioning Crazy Horse” and “Lakota” will be installed in the gallery for the next several months. Each is for sale and the proceeds will benefit the Library. The artist painted the mural in the office complex on 13th street across the street from the Post Office. Born in 1947, Eagle Horse is Hunkpapa Lakota and was raised primarily on a reservation in South Dakota. Much of his work are ceremonial pieces such as highly decorated tomahawks and drums as well as large paintings featuring sacred and significant images from Lakota culture. Come by to see this beautiful and moving works.

New this week is “Next to Last Stand” by Craig Johnson. In 1946, one of the most viewed and copied paintings in American history, “Custer’s Last Fight”, was destroyed in a fire. At least that is the story. Walt Longmire is called in when a man named Charley Lee Stillwater has died in a nursing home of an apparent heart attack. Hidden in a shoebox is a piece of the painting sitting on top of 1 million dollars. Now Longmire finds himself on the trail of a 74 year old art heist.
“The Coast-to-Coast Murders” by James Patterson and J.D. Barker is also out this week. Siblings Michael and Megan Fitzgerald share a dark history. They were adopted at early age by an Ivy League psychologist and a renowned psychiatrist who treated the kids as human guinea pigs. Michael and Megan learned early on that the only people they could trust were each other. In California, FBI agent Jessica Gimble and Detective Garrett Dobbs believe they have an open and shut case on their hands. The number one suspect is quickly identified and then arrested. Then the killings keep happening again and again and all over the country. Soon the Fitzgerald family comes into the investigators’ radar. Gimble and Dobbs know they are on the right track, but which Fitzgerald is the culprit?
Jodi Picoult’s new novel is called The Book of Two Ways. Dawn Edelstein is a death doula. She helps her clients ease the transition from life to death. While she loves her husband and their daughter, a near death experience has filled her with doubts about the life she leads. After miraculously surviving a plane crash landing, Dawn takes up the offer of the airline for a trip anywhere in the world. Instead of going home, she travels to Egypt to reconnect with a man she has not seen in fifteen years.
