With a slight breeze and under a setting sun, approximately 65 of the Bandera faithful made the trek to Blanco to see their varsity Bulldogs take on the Panthers Friday night.
At the end of the game, under a crescent moon, the scoreboard read 61-6 at the final buzzer as the home team took the win to move their season record to 3-1.
With the loss, Bandera falls to 0-3 on the season.
Non-district play for the Bulldogs has been a learning experience for the entire team against three teams that are collectively,10-2, so far this year.
Bandera's offense continued to struggle, gaining just 153 total yards with 148 of that on the ground.
"We say the eye in the sky don't lie, and when we watch film, we see the mistakes on both sides of the ball and on special teams. The numbers are there, but it's busted assignments, mistakes and just not making the plays we need to. We are just not executing, bottom line," Head Coach Joel Fontenot-Amedee said.
On a positive note, Bandera did score their first points of the year and had their first 100 yard rusher against Blanco.
The Panthers high powered run game was on display as nine different ball carriers racked up 477 yards on 41 carries and they also gained 80 yards through the air.
"There will be a point later in the season where we are going to say we are a lot better than we were. With no 7 on 7 and no spring workouts, we lost a lot of time working with the guys before the start of the season," Fontenot-Amedee said.
This Friday will see Bandera head to Comfort to take on the Bobcats in the final game of non-district play.
Comfort is unbeaten coming in, with victories over Brackett, Mason, Marion and Uvalde.
"They are a very good football team, they play hard, fast and are very physical on every play.
Their skill group is good and their offense is similar to what we just saw and they execute well," Fontenot-Amedee said.
The bottom line is this, Bandera can be 0-4 or 1-3 in non-district, but what counts is on the horizon and that is district play.
Bandera's opening game in district is against Crystal City on Oct. 9.
"We will be prepared when we get to district. Going through the struggles we have, you learn by making mistakes. We are making those mistakes in prime time at the varsity level against some really good teams and you can't get away with mistakes at this level.
"I can promise you, we are going to get this right, we are going to keep coaching and playing hard. It's a process and we are going to get there," Fontenot-Amedee said.
