The latest at the Bandera Library

By Mauri Guillén Fagan
Bandera Library Director

It is Spooky Month and the Bandera Library is the place to get some great scary stories for the season. Come by and check out our Featured Wall that is filled with titles for all ages with stories that will get you into the Halloween spirit.
Don’t forget to call and register your child for our Night Sky Rock Painting Party on Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 10:30 a.m. Spots are limited.  Beginning Friday, Oct. 16, the Community Council will take appointments at the library from 9 a.m. to noon. Community Council of South Central Texas is dedicated to helping families and individuals in our area with home and rental assistance, job training and placement and utilities assistance among many other things. To make an appointment call 830-896-0204.
The Bandera Library is a demonstration site for the Texas Talking Book Program. The program provides audio players and books on tape for patrons with visual impairments. There are four titles available and are changed out every other month. If you are interested in using the talking book machine, call the Library to make an appointment. Any participants can also request the library director order specific titles they are interested in.
New titles this week are Ian Rankin’s latest installment in the Inspector Rebus series called A Song for the Dark Times. Inspector Rebus is awoken in the middle of the night by a call from his daughter, Samantha and know this cannot be good news. Samantha’s husband has been missing for two days and the two fear the worst. From his many years in police work, Rebus knows Samantha will be the prime suspect. This may be the first time in his career Rebus would prefer not knowing the truth.
John Grisham has a new book out this week too. A Time for Mercy finds us again in Clanton, Mississippi in the early 90s. Jake Brigance has taken on a case that is driving an enormous divide in this small town. The court appoints Brigance attorney for a shy 16-year old boy who has been accused of murdering a police officer. Most in the town are braying for a quick trial and demanding the death penalty for the boy. However, as Brigance begins digging, he finds there is more to this story that meets the eye. To spare this young man from the gas chamber, Brigance risks his career, the safety of his family and their financial security.
The Bandera Library is open by appointment and masks are required. Appointments are available Monday to Friday from 9 am to 6 p.m. Curbside service is still available for checking out books, copying, faxing and printing service. Happy tales, y’all.
