Freshman Bulldogs fall in final game of season
By Chris Darus

Fifteen.
Fifteen freshmen players were all who dressed out for the final game of the season against the Pearsall Mavericks.
Bandera was looking for their first win in district, but it was not to be as the Bulldogs fell to the Mavericks, 33-12.
Pearsall scored 21 unanswered points before halftime, the last with just four seconds left in the second quarter, to put Bandera in a do or die situation for the second half and the Bulldogs gave it a good shot.
The Bulldogs got on the board with 5:39 left in the third on a Dylan Gherman to Corbin Gonzales 31 yard completion, but a failed two point conversion kept it at 21-6.
Bandera followed up the score with a successful onside kick at the Maverick 45 yard line.
The Bulldogs were driving to score but a fumble killed their momentum as Pearsall took over on the Pearsall 25.
Bandera returned the favor as the Bulldogs snatched the ball out of a Maverick players grasp and it was ruled a turnover, to give Bandera a fresh set of downs with 2:58 left in the third.
A few plays later, Gherman found Alex Dirck in the right front corner of the end zone to make it 21-12.
Another failed two point attempt resulted in an interception and it was almost a Pick Six except for Jacob Lannon running down the Maverick defender turned runningback after a 60 yard chase.
Early in the fourth, Pearsall scored on a QB bootleg with 8:06 left in the game to make it 27-12 and putting the game out of reach for Bandera.
The Bulldog defense kept the two point conversion out of the end zone, but Pearsall managed to score once more with 3:08 left making it 33-12. A broken play resulted in a two pointer to make it a 35-12 but an Unsportsmanlike Conduct call negated the score.
Pearsall made a last minute drive and scored twice but a penalty on each score against the Mavericks kept it 33-12 as they took a knee to end the hard fought contest.
Things are looking up for football fans in Bandera.
This team, comprised of freshmen only, ended the season with a 0-3-2 district mark, but showed the Bulldogs will have a decent team next season and beyond as the players get more experience and coaching in the current system.
