Lakehills Area Library Leanings
By Vicki L. George
The Bandera Prophet
The Lakehills Area Library is pleased to announce the results of the Feb. 13 Fundraiser and Dinner, where 240 meals were served from the Lakehills Civic Center.
Garry Hohmann won the Smith & Wesson M&P 15 Sport II 5.56 rifle, donated by Boyle’s True Value of Bandera and Lakehills.
Mike Gibson won the $500 Visa gift card.
The event raised more than $12,000, which will benefit the library, and our community, in many ways.
The library thanks everyone for their support.
The library is looking for collections to display. If you would like to share your collection with our community, the library has a place for that, in a glass display case. They would like to highlight the various interests of community members. Call Dianna at 830-510-2777.
The library adds new books, DVDs and audio books every week. New items include: seven audio books by James Patterson; The Lost Boys by Faye Kellerman; If I Disappear by Eliza Jane Brazier; The Russian by James Patterson; Greenlights by Matthew McConaughey; Stone Cross by Marc Cameron; The Queen’s Gambit by Walter S. Tevis; and many more. They will also take requests when ordering books, so please let them know what you would like to read.
The Preschool Storytime Program continues. Director Dianna Landes reads to the youngsters virtually through YouTube and craft kits may be picked up by parents at the library each week. The crafts are free and designed to meet preschool learning requirements with an emphasis on letters, numbers, reading and writing. Parents can register at [email protected] or call the library at 830-510-2777.
The library is preparing for the school kids summer reading program, Tails and Tales, which will benefit all grade levels of young people, with varying levels of difficulty.
The library now has a Zoom book club on the second Wednesday of each month, at 1 p.m. On March 10 the group will discuss The Lies That Bind by Emily Giffin. Contact the library to receive the link to join the discussion. All are welcome.
Parents are encouraged to participate in the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program. This is a free program to encourage parents to read to their children so the they are ready for kindergarten. Each child will record the books read and, after 100 books, the child is promoted to the “rainbow board” at the library. At 500 books, the child will receive a small prize and, at 1,000 books, the child will get a bigger prize. Stop by the library to join the program.
The library has a subscription to Ancestry so that it is available to patrons free of charge at the library or from home at the library website. There are many books in the library for research, as well. The library is also a Family Search library, which allows patrons to access records through the Family Search website.
Library cards are free and will allow free access to thousands of downloadable ebooks and audio books as well as online databases full of correct and helpful information on any subject imaginable.
All services are available including books, movies, audio, printing, faxing, notary, and scanning. Also, hundreds of paperback and hardcover books and DVDs, are available for purchase.
Landes reminds patrons who are uncomfortable coming inside that all services are available at the door. The free WiFi is always available in the parking lot.
The library’s hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Masks are required, as is social distancing.
