The latest at the Bandera Library
By Mauri Guillén Fagan
Bandera Library Director
It’s a new month and the Bandera Library is here for it. Mark your calendars for Thursday, March 4, at 10 a.m., for the Monthly Book Club meeting via Zoom. The group is discussing The Professor and the Madman: A Tale of Murder, Insanity and the Making of the Oxford English Dictionary by Simon Winchester.
In 1857, the behemoth undertaking of creating a comprehensive English dictionary began. The overseeing committee led by Professor James Murray discovered that more than 10,000 definitions had been submitted by a single man: Dr. W. C. Minor. In their effort to honor Dr. Minor’s enormous contribution, the committee discovers a shocking truth. Dr. Minor was a veteran of the American Civil War and an inmate at an asylum for the criminally insane.
Saturday, March 6, is the Friends of the Library Monthly Book Fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Come by to pick up new and gently used books. All books are available by donation and the proceeds benefit the Library. If you can’t make it on the 6th, don’t forget the Book Nook is always open and is regularly refreshed with new stock.
Tuesday, March 16, at 10:30 a.m., is the Monthly Craft Making Party for Kids. Kiddos will have a St. Patrick’s Day craft and a small treat. Don’t forget to wear green! Masks will be required for kids over the age of 10 and there are a limited number of spots left. You can register by calling the Library or through our Engaged Patrons link on the Library’s website.
The Bandera Library is open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Curbside service is still available for checkouts and business services. Free Wi-Fi is available 24/7. Check out our website www.banderacountylibrary.org for all up-to-date information. Masks are required while you are in the building.
Happy tales, y’all.
