Bandera County commissioners on Tuesday proclaimed May as Neurofibromatosis Awareness Month, and May 17 as Neurofibromatosis Awareness Day.
Neurofibromatosis (NF) is more prevalent than Cystic Fibrosis and Muscular Dystrophy combined, the proclamation states, and affects one of 2,500 to 3,000 people worldwide.
NF is a genetic disorder of the nervous system. It involves the uncontrolled growth of tumors along the nerves anywhere in and on the body. It is linked to learning disabilities, high blood pressure and epilepsy, and can affect the development of the brain, cardiovascular system, bones and skin.
According to the Mayo Clinic, complications of NF can include hearing loss, learning impairment, heart and blood vessel problems, loss of vision and severe pain.
