Tomorrow is Cinco de Mayo! No, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day (that’s in September), but it is an important day. It is the commemoration of the 1862 Battle of Puebla where a small group of Mexican soldiers were able to defeat a much larger group of French invaders. For a fuller history of this important battle, check out the library’s blog post this week.
On Thursday, May 6, at 10 a.m., the Monthly Book Club will be meeting on the back patio of the library to discuss The Feather Thief by Kirk Wallace Johnson. In 2009, a young American flautist named Edwin Rist departed London on a train bound for a satellite campus of the British Museum of Natural History. The Tring Museum is home to one of the world’s largest ornithological collections in the world. While inside the museum, Rist stole hundred of bird skins some dating back to the time of Charles Darwin. Along with being a professional musician, Rist was also a championship fly-tier and wanted the extraordinarily valuable feather for salmon fly-tying. He seemed to have gotten away with the crime, until a few years later the author heard the tale of the heist from his fly-fishing guide in New Mexico. Kirk Wallace Johnson then began a years long obsession with finding the criminal.
Join us on Tuesday, May 11, at 10:30 a.m., for our Monthly Craft Making Party for kids. We will celebrate Hero Day and learning origami to make thank you cards for first responders. You can call the library to register or use the link for Engaged Patrons on our website www.banderacountylibrary.org.
Malcolm Gladwell’s newest book is titled The Bomber Mafia: A Dream, a Temptation, and the Longest Night of the Second World War. In year leading up to WWII, airplanes were largely an afterthought. It was not until a motley group of military strategists began to reimagine how to use the airplane. The “Bomber Mafia” asked the question: what if critical geographic points could be taken out by precision bombing to cripple an enemy?
The Bandera Library is open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Curbside service is available for checkouts and business services. Free Wi-Fi is available 24/7. Happy tales, y’all.
