MEMORIAL DAY is a federal holiday for honoring the military personnel who died while serving in the Untied States Armed Forces. It is observed on the last Monday of May.
Many people visit cemeteries and memorials on Memorial Day to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Volunteers place an American flag on the graves of military personnel.
Memorial Day is also considered the unofficial start of summer in the United States.
In 1920, the National American Legion adopted the Poppy as their official symbol of remembrance.
