In a late-night tragedy last Thursday, July 8, a 76-year-old Vietnam War veteran escaped a fire with his life, but lost his home. County Fire Marshal John Stith said the man was inside his RV sleeping, when he woke up to smoke and fire. He got out in time, but the blaze was fully involved by the time the Lake Medina Shores fire department arrived.
Stith said he contacted the Red Cross, however they could not provide assistance until the next day. Stith said the Best Western Bandera Suites and Saloon offered to donate a room for the night. Friday, the Red Cross, Helping Hand and Silver Sage helped with donations.
“It was really a combined effort,” Stith said. “It’s imperative that we do everything we can to help anybody who experiences loss due to a fire.”
Stith said as of today, the cause of the fire is undetermined.
In a message on social media, Art Crawford with the Silver Sage said he collected enough contributions to purchase a suitable trailer and other household items for the victim, who is also a Meals on Wheels recipient.
