Keep in Beat with the Bandera Library

By Mauri Guillén Fagan
Bandera Library Director

September is National Voter Registration Month. As a public library, the Bandera Library is an official Voter Registration Agency. There are voter registration cards available at the circulation counter, just ask the librarians. If you are recently moved here or you need to update your address, be sure to stop by to pick up a card and submit it to the state.
Wednesday is the first day of our Pumpkin Decorating Contest. Kids and teens can pick up a small pumpkin at the library and decorate it like any character in a book. Decorated pumpkins are due Oct. 15. We will have voting in person and online. The winner will be announced on Oct. 29 and will receive a gift card to Snowflake Donuts. If you want to enter your own pumpkin into the contest just submit a picture of the child with their pumpkin to [email protected].
If games and entertainment are what you seek, the library has some great options. Dungeons and Dragons meets every Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Downstairs Meeting Room. D&D is at its core a game of storytelling. The players guide their characters through adventures, battles, mysteries and quests. Players of any age and experience are welcome.
You can also join our Official Pokemon League that meets on Mondays from 4:30 - 6 p.m. in the Downstairs Meeting Room. The Pokemon League plays the Trading Card Game together and also to discuss their favorite manga and anime books, TV and movies.
Come by to see this month’s Artist of the Month installment. Local artist Anita Smith is a painter who works mostly with pastel. Pastel is a medium that marries painting and drawing. The effect is luminous and rich colors which lend to the beautiful renditions of the natural elements in the Hill Country such as century plants and prickly pear cacti, that are common themes in Anita’s work. Smith has studied drawing and painting all over the country. Her work has been accepted into many juried art shows and won numerous awards. In 2000, her painting won first prize in the American Printing House for the Blind’s art competition in Louisville, Ky. All of her works on display are for sale with a portion of the sale benefitting the library.
The Bandera Library is open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Curbside service is available for checkouts and business services. Free Wi-Fi is available 24/7. Masks are recommended while in the library building. Check out our website www.banderacountylibrary.org for all up-to-date information.
Happy tales, y’all.
