Bulldogs slash Cougars for second win of season, 21-0

The Bandera Prophet
The steadily improving Bandera Bulldogs made another step in the right direction with a 21-0 shutout over the Cole Cougars Friday night at Bulldog Stadium.
Cole, coming in at 2-0 and based at Ft. Sam Huston, was a fitting opponent on Military Appreciation Night as both teams took the field for the coin toss with team captains and honorary military captains at midfield.
The Bulldogs started the game working to midfield, but an interception killed their first drive. Cole did work the ball back inside the Bulldog 20 where the Bulldog defense holds on a fourth and short to force a turnover on downs.
The Cougars return the favor late in the second quarter. With Bandera looking to extend a drive and facing a fourth and three, the Cougars hold and force a turnover on downs to negate a scoring chance for Bandera.
Bandera has been a slow starter offensively this season and Friday was no different with no score shown on the scoreboard at halftime for either side.
Bandera's defense held the Cougars deep in Cole territory to open the third quarter and continued to keep Cole off the scoreboard for the entire quarter of play.
Bandera scores first about half way through the third with 6:07 left.
A 30-yard pass over the middle sees the ball come off of a Cole defenders hands and Bandera's David Guerra maintains focus to nab the ball and motor to the goal line while dragging a defender with him.
A good PAT makes it 7-0.
Bandera would score twice again, first on a seven yard rush to open the fourth quarter as workhorse Brock Johnson scores untouched up the middle.
Later, a hard hit on Coles QB by the Bulldog defensive linemen leads to a fumble recovery for Bandera and a six yard run by Luke Barnett. A final PAT by Beto Muzquiz finishes the scoring.
Along with Johnson pounding the Cole defense for exactly half of Bandera's 50 plays from scrimmage, the Bulldog offensive line stepped up their game as well with improved protection for the Bulldog backfield.
Bandera racked up 302 yards of offense on the night, 78 passing and 224 on the ground.
A couple of drops and numerous holding penalties did cost the Bulldogs some first downs and helped stop a few drives, but these are things that will be worked on this week in practice.
Defensively, Mathew Staton led the team with nine tackles and four assists and Jesse Cardenas had another outstanding game for Bandera. After recording 15 tackles last week against Cotulla, he had seven tackles, five assists and two big sacks against Cole.
Bandera will host Comfort in game three of a five game home stand. The Bobcats are currently 1-2 and are coming off a 35-6 loss to an unbeaten and very good Marion team.
Kickoff is Friday at 7:30 p.m. and you might want to get there early as the stands are filling up more and more each week to watch those hometown Bulldogs extend their win streak.
