Bandera's varsity Bulldogs moved to 4-1 (.800) on the season with a 42-0 home shutout over the Manor New Tech Titans Friday night.
After the homecoming game ball was delivered via helicopter by interim Superintendent Gary Bitzkie, the game got underway.
Bandera scored 21 points in the first quarter, their best performance so far this year. Bulldog quarterback Tyler Moore found wide receiver Alex Dirck to open the scoring on a 21-yard catch and run with 10:26 left, that was followed by a Moore scamper untouched into the end zone from 13 yards out and Brock Johnson bulled his way in from the two yard line with under 3:00 left in the quarter.
All three scores were followed by a Beto Muzquiz PAT, he actually had to kick four as there was an Illegal substitution penalty on the Bulldogs third attempt, forcing a do over.
In the second quarter, Johnson scored on another two yard rush and that was followed by Luke Barnett on a one yard walk into the endzone, setup by a pass he intercepted a few plays earlier. Muzquiz added another two PATs to give the Bulldogs a 35 -0 lead at the half.
Moore would close out the scoring in the third on a 33 yard rush and added with a good Muzquiz kick, make it 42-0. Later in the game, Bandera was on the Titan 14, but missed a 24 yard FG attempt wide left.
Bandera focused on the run game this week, rushing for 291 yards on 44 plays while attempting just 10 passes, completing four of them for 47 yards.
Bulldogs Johnson and Moore both eclipsed the 100 yard rushing mark again this week, Johnson with 127 yards and Moore with 107.
Defensively, the Bulldogs only gave up 150 yards to the Titans in one of their better defensive efforts of the year.
Bandera played the starters in the first half and started subbing them on both sides of the ball after halftime with backups and JV players brought up this week, due to no JV game on Thursday.
Sophomore Dylan Gherman, the JV quarterback, led the team with five solo tackles from the cornerback position in his second game on the varsity.
As good as the team played Friday, Bandera still has stuff to work on.
The Bulldogs coughed up the ball early in the second, but the Bulldog defense returned the favor with a fumble recovery soon after. Manor intercepted two Bulldog passes, but the Bandera defense held strong, getting the shutout.
"We are hopeful going into each game that the guys that aren't starters get a chance to play, they did good and got some varsity experience. We have a good group of sophomores, some have already been playing up, and we will have to replace 16 seniors after the season," coach Joel Fontenot-Amedee said.
All varsity teams in District 15-4AD2 will get this Friday off for a bye week before entering district play on Oct. 8, with Bandera traveling to Crystal City.
With the start of district, all teams are effectively 0-0.
"Crystal City is a tough place to play. They are well coached and you throw the records out when district starts. They have changed it up, throwing the ball, a big change to what they have done in the past, but we will be ready," Fontenot-Amedee said.
With the varsity getting a bye week, the JV Bulldogs hosting Tom Moore Ingram Thursday at 6 p.m., is the best game in town.
