The Bandera Prophet
With the Bulldog varsity football team getting a well deserved rest before the start of District 154AD2 play starting Friday, the only game in town was the JV Bulldogs hosting the Tom Moore Ingram Warriors Thursday evening.
The game was seemingly in hand with Bandera bolting out to a 16-0 lead, but it turned out to be a character-building and learning experience for both teams.
After Bandera stalled the Ingram opening drive that consumed 5:15 of the first quarter, the Bulldog offense mounted an extended drive that looked like it would take into the second quarter.
Mitchell Powell scored for Bandera on a 32 yard scamper down the right sideline with no time left in the first and then Powell makes the two pointer to give Bandera an 8-0 lead.
Gattlin Winkler intercepted an Ingram pass on the following set of downs and gave Bandera a short field with 8:24 left in the half to set up a Dylan Peace to Jackson Satterfield 14-yard catch and run to put Bandera up, 16-0 after a Peace two-point conversion.
Ingram was down, but not out after the following kickoff was returned 50 yards to make it first and 10 from the Bulldog 15.
Ingram scores on a five-yard pass in the back corner of the end zone with 1:45 left in the half and after Bandera foils the two point attempt, it’s 16-6 at the half.
In the third, Ingram kept at it and managed to punch the ball across the goal line with 2:05 left on a QB keeper from two yards out and a good conversion makes it 16-14.
Bandera punted away to end the quarter, but Ingram fumbled the ball and the Bulldogs were in business on the Bandera 23.
Most of the fourth quarter was played in Bandera’s end of the field and on a fourth and four, the Bulldogs failed to advance the ball, resulting in a turnover on downs on their 29 with 7:44 left.
Kenneth Seth intercepted the ball on the Warriors first play from scrimmage to give the Bulldogs another shot to keep the lead from the Bandera 17 with just over 7:00 left in the game.
The Bulldogs couldn’t capitalize and with 2:47 left, the Warriors again took over on downs on the Bandera 33.
Ingram scored on a short rush with just 1:30 left to get the lead, 20-16. The Warriors forced in a two-point conversion to make it 22-16.
Bandera had a chance in the last 90 seconds, but a Bulldog fumble and recovery on the ensuing kickoff, gave them the ball on the Bandera 27.\
Bulldog quarterback Peace goy hit in the backfield and fumbled, but an alert Micah McCreary picked up the ball and netted a two-yard gain.
Bandera’s hopes were dashed on an incomplete pass on fourth down deep in the Bulldog end to give the ball back to Ingram on downs and the Warriors took a knee to end the game.
The JV Bulldogs will look to bounce back at home this Thursday against Crystal City to open up district play. Kickoff is at 5:30, come on out and show the team your support.
