JV Bulldogs lose in frantic fourth quarter
By Chris Darus
The Bandera Prophet
The Bandera JV Bulldogs charged out to a 16-6 lead, but Hondo won the game with a last minute, half field drive to grab a 26-22 win. The loss leaves Bandera at 4-4 with this weeks final game, against Pearsall, away on Thursday.
Bandera’s Dylan Peace found TE Riley Haley on a 59 yard catch and run to set up the Bulldogs opening score on a short rush and convert the two point play to take an 8-0 lead with 5:41 left in the first.
Hondo answered with 2:10 left in the quarter on a 28 yard QB keeper, but the Bulldog defense keeps Hondo out of the end zone to make the score, 8-6.
The Bulldogs scored again in the half on a Peace to Zach Quesnot seven yard pass and Jake Lannon converted on the two pointer for a 16-6 lead at the half. Hondo threatened late in the second, but the Bulldog defense stood tall and kept the Owls from scoring inside the Bulldog 10 and forces a turnover on downs. Hondo scored on a third and goal with 5:49 left in the third, and once again the Bulldogs deny to two pointer, to make it 16-12.
And this is where things got interesting.
In the fourth, Hondo mounts an extended drive, eating a lot of clock and manage to take the lead on a third and three from the 8 with 4:54 left in the game. The Bulldogs deny the Owls again on the two pointer to keep it, 18-16.
Bandera’s Lannon scores on a short rush after a Peace to Quesnot 50 yard completion, to get the Bulldogs inside the 5 with 2:47 left.
Hondo returns the favor, keeping Bandera from scoring on the two point attempt to keep it, 22-18. Hondo takes the win on a 28 yard rush with 54 seconds left and the Owls take to the air for the two pointer to make it 26-22.
