Season ends with 68-14 playoff loss to Sinton

By Chris Darus
The Bandera Prophet

This will be the first Friday that the Bulldog faithful will not have football since mid–August.
Bandera’s varsity season came to an end last Friday night on the artificial turf in Jourdanton with a loss to the 18th ranked Sinton Pirates, the number one seed for District 16-4AD2.
The Pirates showed their strength early, taking a 41-0 lead at the half on their way to a 68-14 win.
Both of the Bulldogs scores came later in the game, a short rush by Tyler Moore that spoiled Sinton’s shutout bid  and a 60 yard catch and run by Jesse Cardenas.
Bandera ran into a buzz saw in Sinton who ran for 574 yards and passed for 70 against Bandera while the Pirate defense limited the Bulldogs to 172 yards of offense, 130 passing and 42 rushing.
There is no way to prepare for a team like that unless you have played someone at that level, there was no one on Bandera’s schedule that had the size, speed, offensive capabilities or was as good defensively.
Sinton has a good chance of going a few rounds and maybe even make the finals this season, but they will need to get by La Grange at Converse’s Rutledge Stadium this Friday.
Bandera is a program that is building and that will lead to becoming what Sinton is, a contender for a district championship every year and a perennial playoff team. The Pirates have made the UIL playoffs nine of the last 10 seasons and usually go a few rounds deep.
Bandera is on the right track, making the playoffs two of the last three years and the current underclassmen will have a chance to make that three out of four next season.
“We have a lot of positives for the season, building a strong foundation and traditions for the underclassmen. There is a buzz among students about wanting to participate in various sports that wasn’t there before.
The JV had a 5-4 season, their best since the middle school seventh grade “A” team went 7-1 and won district, the eighth grade football numbers have increased, Bandera had a 1,000 yard passer in (Tyler) Moore and a 1,000 yard rusher this season with (Brock) Johnson.
Varsity football increased scoring from 74 points in 20-21 to 246 this season, a huge step in the right direction.
Defensively, we improved immensely, from giving up 405 points in 20-21 to 231 this year. Throw out the playoff loss to Sinton, we gave up 163 points in 10 games, a 16.3 ppg average. That’s down from the 45 or so a game last season,” coach Joel Fontenot-Amedee said.
Defensively, Matthew Staton and Jesse Cardenas were almost carbon copies all season statwise. The duo matched stats for tackles, 117 to 115, tackles for loss, 23 to 21 and forced fumbles, 2 to 3, to lead the Bulldog defense to a good year.
Bandera had one First Team All-District selection last year, this season the Bulldogs have seven to go along with five second team selections and Bandera also has the Offensive Newcomer of the Year. These selections will be made public later this week.
It was a good season, but there is the promise of more to come as we wait for August 2022 to roll around.
