The Bandera varsity basketball team picked up its first win in a season opener since 2018 as the Bulldogs overcame a slow start to defeat Harper 67-42 last Tuesday.
After scoring just four points in the first quarter, Bandera went on a 17-0 run as the Bulldogs were able to create turnovers and convert in transition at a high rate in the second quarter.
Struggles on both the offensive and defensive end of the floor
after the halftime break briefly allowed Harper to crawl back into the game, but the Bulldogs outscored the Longhorns 29-11 in the fourth to secure the 25-point win.
Senior Ryan Perez finished with a team-high 18 points, 12 rebounds and 6 steals, and provided the spark needed down the stretch to put the game out of reach by converting on three consecutive and-one opportunities. Junior Noah Barnett had 13 points, 7 steals, 4 assists and 3 rebounds, senior Tyler Moore had 11 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals, junior Kayden Brown had 11 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals, junior Gavi n Ortiz had 8 points, 5 steals, 4 assists and 4 rebounds, freshman Eli Salas had 6 points and 2 steals, sophomore Cale Barnett had 5 rebounds, senior Joseph Kennedy had 3 rebounds and junior Braden Cox had 3 rebounds.
The Bulldogs moved to 1-0 on the season with the win.
Coach’s Notes: “We were really sloppy at times, but we turned up the pressure defensively to give ourselves a chance to go on a few important runs. We turned the ball over far too many times and didn’t shoot the ball very well, so that will be a point of emphasis over the next few days.
We did a great job of converting opportunities in transition and had several different guys step up to make a key impact, some of them while playing in their first varsity games.
We have a lot of room to grow, but pulling away the way we did in a physical game after a slow start certainly isn’t a bad way to start
the season.”
