TEXAS CONFEDERATE MEMORIAL DAY is Wednesday, Jan. 19, when those of us whose ancestors fought for the Confederacy honor our fallen soldiers. In 1973, the Texas Legislature officially recognized this day as a state holiday and called it Confederate Heroes Day, “To honor all who had served the Southern Cause.”
All 11 Southern states commemorate Confederate Memorial Day, each setting its own date. The national holiday, Memorial Day, was originally established to honor only the Northern soldiers who perished in the Civil War. Only after WWI did Congress officially establish the last Monday of May as the day to honor all fallen soldiers in all our wars, including the Civil War.
AMERICAN LEGION POST 410, 147 Legion Dr. in Lakehills, serves home cooked meals every Tuesday evening at 5:30 p.m. Each week offers a different dish, with sides and beverage for $8 a plate. The Post, bar and canteen, is open to the public every day except Thursdays, from 3 p.m. All are welcome.
Monday Night Pool starts at 7 p.m. every Monday. No tournaments, no brackets, just playing for fun. The public is welcome to join in.
