Powerlifting
The Lady Bulldogs took five lifters to compete at the Region 5 meet at the Burt Ogden Arena in Edinburg last week.
Bandera had three lifters that qualified at 123 pounds, Emily Garcia, Ashley Grodman and Hazel Lopez.
Garcia had a three lift total of 735 pounds to finish second in 4AD2 and will move on to the State Championships in Corpus Christi on March 18.
Grodman’s total of 650 pounds was good for sixth place, but not enough to advance to state.
Lopez, a freshman, did not complete her first lift (bench press) and was thereby unable to continue on, but she did get insight on what to work on for next season.
At 181, sophomore Kamryn Golightly had her best meet of the year with a total of 760 pounds, a personal record, on her way to a fifth place finish. She has made good progress this season and gained valuable experience for next year.
Due to a rules infraction, Dorothy Magee was unfortunately disqualified. Magee had a good chance of finishing in a good spot and making the state meet.
“Region 5 is the toughest and strongest region in the state year in and year out. We had some ups and downs, but these girls competed to the best of their abilities and I am proud of their season long efforts,” coach Manny Martinez said.
The Bulldogs have qualified four lifters for the Region 5 meet that will take place March 11 and 12 in Bishop.

Girls Soccer
March started out on the downside for Lady Bulldog Soccer with a 5-0 loss to Canyon Lake last Tuesday.
Bandera goalkeeper Bietzel Gonzalez had 20 saves on the night and coach Keith Kuenzel cited the good defensive play of Ashlyn Brown, Hannah Edwards and Yadi Mendoza helping Gonzalez out.
On Friday, things were looking up with a 1-1 tie against Fredericksburg.
Bandera scored early on a Sydney Jaeger goal and tried to hold off the Lady Billies, who found the back of the net in the second half for the tie.
Gonzalez made 19 saves for the contest.
Friday night’s match will be Parents Night and the final district matchup with a 5:40 p.m. start time.
Baseball
Bulldog Varsity baseball went to the South Texas Slugfest over the weekend where they went 1-3.
Thursday saw the Bulldogs take on the Holy Cross Knights. After opening up an 8-0 lead in the first, Bandera scored 3 more runs in the second and cruised to an 11-5 win to open tourney play.
Friday’s first game was against Somerset and Bandera again took a lead, this time a 2 run advantage, but that would be it as Somerset’s bats got hot on their way to handing Bandera a 13-2 loss.
That was followed by an 11-0 loss to a very good Boerne Geneva squad.
Bandera scattered six hits in game four but S.A. McCollum ended Bandera’s bid to go .500 for the weekend with a 10-0 shutout.
Cizek led the team for the tournament going 3 for 6 with 3 RBIs, Barrett Waid went 3 for 7 with two doubles and Randon Wheeler was 3 for 8 at the plate.
