MEMORIAL DAY is a federal holiday for honoring the military personnel who died while serving in the Untied States Armed Forces. It is observed on the last Monday of May, this year on May 30.
Many people visit cemeteries and memorials on Memorial Day to honor those who died while serving in the military. Volunteers place an American flag on the graves of military personnel.
Memorial Day is also considered the unofficial start of summer in the United States.
Two other days celebrate those who have served or are serving in the US military: Veterans Day, which honors those who have served in the United States Armed Forces; and Armed Forces Day, an unofficial US holiday (earlier in May) for honoring those currently serving in the armed forces.
In 1920, the National American Legion adopted the Poppy as their official symbol of remembrance.

PRIMARY RUN-OFF ELECTION DAY is Tuesday, May 24, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Each voter must vote in their own precinct.
