Local Sports Racing into the Future

The Bandera Prophet
Southern Drag Boat Association
Thanks to his number one qualifying spot and having the best reaction time, local drag boat racer Brody Martin was declared the winner of the Brady Crawfish and Drag Boat Shootout after the event was determined to be “winded out” causing the event to end because of unsafe conditions.
Martin, in his “In the Red” Quick Eliminator entry, had a .049 reaction time and covered the 1000 ft. long course in 6.03 seconds at 135 mph. He actually ran a 5.98 in qualifying, but that run was not legal as the class is limited to 6.00 seconds.
“In the Red” is a 1988 Cole Drag Hydro powered by a 498 Cubic inch big block Chevrolet with an 8-71 supercharger making an estimated 1100 horsepower.
Martin is currently in second place in the class and the team will head to Lake Nasworthy on June 24-25 to race in the Showdown in San Angelo.
Bandera Athletic Facilities Improvement Team
Turf at Bandera High School and other upgrades at BHS and BMS may happen faster than you think, if it is up to the Bandera Athletic Facilities Improvement Team.
The organizations mission is to raise funding for the improvement of BISD athletic facilities that are not in the school district's budget.
The non-profit 501c3 entity had their second meeting Sunday evening to talk about fundraising to make the improvements that will benefit many students in the district.
At the top of the list is replacing the natural grass at BHS with turf.
Why? Reduced upkeep costs, no watering or reseeding needed and the ability for students to utilize the field at Bulldog Stadium to start.
Turf will benefit more than just football. With turf, all teams could use the field in any weather when needed for practices. No staying off the field due to reseeding, watering or rainy conditions, and it would benefit football, soccer, band, cheer, dance and ROTC by letting them practice on a surface that they will probably be competing on.
Out of the 212 4A schools in Texas, that information was available for that play football and soccer, only 26 don’t have turf.
Another benefit would be a chance to raise additional money by becoming a hosting facility for football and soccer playoffs during playoffs, state 7 on 7 tournaments and band competitions, all of which will also benefit the Bandera Athletic Booster club to raise money through concessions during the events.
This would also have a positive impact on our town as well, with people coming to town for these events, eating, shopping and maybe deciding to stay over or return at a later date for a visit.
With the increasing of numbers of student athletes in athletics at BHS doubling in the past three years, it makes sense to move forward as fast as possible to make these things happen.
The district has made many improvements in the past few years, by budgeting and by donation.
New weight room equipment, flooring and a small patch of turf at the high school, gym floors refinished, painting locker rooms, renovating the press box at Bulldog Stadium, new netting at the baseball and softball fields, four new scoreboards and a digital scorer's table at the high school and renovating the BMS stadium are just a few of them.
If you would like to be part of the team to help the new generations of Bulldogs, you can join their next meeting upstairs at TJ’s at the Old Forge on June 24, at 6 p.m.
