Keep in Beat with the Bandera Library

By Ashley Montes
Bandera Public Library

July is coming to an end but there is still a ton of things to do here at the Bandera Kronkosky Public Library.
August is just around the corner and you know what that means? School is about to start. This Saturday, July 30, from 4:30 - 7:30 p.m., stop by the library’s table at the Back to School Bash held at the Lakehills Community Center. We hope to see you there.
On Thursday, July 28, at 3:30 p.m., the Bandera County Gardeners club will meet in our Downstairs Meeting room. The group discusses different gardening tips, techniques and stories about gardening in the area. Whether you are an old pro or just getting started with your own garden, the gardening club is for everyone.
The Bandera Library now has a Sorenson Videophone available for the public. The videophone makes it easier for those who are deaf or hard of hearing who need the assistance of an interpreter to communicate via telephone. The videophone offers a deaf-centric hardware with a camera and interpreting services that helps create an easier interpreting experience. If you would like to know more about the Sorenson Videophone, contact the Bandera Public Library.
New titles in the library this week include P.T. Deutermann’s “The Last Paladin.” This novel is based on the legendary true story of the USS Holland, a World War II Atlantic Fleet destroyer. Summoned to relieve destroyers that are bogged down by escort duty in the escalating Pacific Theater, the Holland is met with a rather cold reception. In the eyes of Pacific Fleet sailors, North Atlantic convoy duty pales in comparison to the bloody, carrier-sinking battles of Savo Island and Guadalcanal. However, Atlantic Fleet ships have had to specialize in one thing: anti-submarine warfare. The Holland is sent off into remote South Pacific operating areas with orders to find and destroy Japanese submarines—but with little expectation of success. Her commanders take the mission literally; using radio intercepts that are being ignored at higher levels, they determine that the Japanese have set up a 1000-mile-long picket line of six submarines, an entire squadron's worth, to act as a moveable barrier against the expected American advance into the next set of islands. These submarines are poised to sink every American aircraft carrier and destroyer and to change the course of the war.
