Bandera Spirits of Texas owner Nancy Harvey has announced her candidacy for mayor of the City of Bandera.
Although local government code states to be eligible for the office of mayor, a person must be a resident of and voter in the city, Harvey - a county resident - said she owns property in the city, owns a business in the city, and operates a business in the city, and should be permitted to represent those interests.
“Most business owners here do not live in the city. It’s taxation without representation,” Harvey said, citing American colonist James Otis, who in 1761 decried the practice of paying taxes to a government authority without any say in that government’s policy, and claimed taxation without representation is tyranny.
“Bandera is the only incorporated city in the county, yet there are many people from all over the county who have a vested interest here,” Harvey said. “It’s a special town to me…We have a history that we need to promote and be proud of. We are part of what makes Texas great.”
In the event her name is not on the ballot, “I will ask people to put me on the ballot as a write-in,” Harvey said.
Election Day is Nov. 8.
