Bulldog Football Notes

By Brady Keane
BHS coaching staff

The Bandera football team traveled to Comfort Thursday night for the team’s final scrimmage of the 2022 preseason and the Bulldogs walked away with several positives to carry into the season opener at all three levels.
Varsity
The varsity Bulldogs competed in a physical and competitive three-quarter running clock scrimmage against Comfort to close out the evening at Bobcat Stadium. Comfort put together a scoring drive on its first two possessions, but the Bulldogs responded well by creating a turnover on the Bobcats’ third drive when Isaac Martinez forced a fumble that was recovered by Carson Powers.
Bandera used the momentum from the turnover to produce an efficient drive that quickly moved the ball into Bobcats’ territory when QB Riley Haley connected with WR Scott Perry on a 30-yard completion. The Bulldogs got into the end zone three plays later on a 17-yard touchdown pass from Haley to WR Alex Dirck.
Bandera again moved the ball deep into Comfort territory on the team’s final possession of the night before penalties and a turnover killed a promising drive. Defensively, the Bulldogs held the Bobcats’ offense in check after the fast start.
Perry finished with three catches for 53 yards while WR Solomon Alexander had five catches for 52 yards. Haley completed 10- of-19 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown, and Jesse Cardenas tallied 26 yards on five carries out of the backfield. Noah Sizemore and Martinez were the leaders of the offensive line, while defensive standouts included Kevin Rodriguez, Daniel Freeman, Ethan Boyd and Martinez.
The Bulldogs now have two complete scrimmages under their belts and will kick off the regular season at Bulldog Stadium against Poteet at 7 p.m. Friday night.
The Aggies, who went 10– 2 last season have scrimmaged Edna and Gonzales in the preseason thus far. The Bull dogs are looking forward to seeing a packed house at Bulldog Stadium Friday night for Little Bulldog Night, when campers from the summer football camp will lead the team onto the field before kickoff.

JV Blue
The JV Blue team also played against Comfort, and the scrimmage started off with a 25-minute running clock period of offense for the Bobcats with the ball starting at the 30-yard line. The Bulldogs’ defensive unit shined from the get-go with freshman Juan Cabrera laying a big hit on a Comfort player from his position at inside linebacker before freshman Jeffry Thomas hauled in his third interception in the last two weeks. Julian Torres, Cade Carriger, Micah McCreary and Kenneth Seth also shined defensively as Bandera held Comfort to just one touchdown.
When the teams flipped and the Bulldogs’ offense took the field for a 25- minute running clock period of offense, Bandera tallied seven touchdowns behind a complete team effort.
Sophomore QB Dylan Peace threw for four touchdowns and ran for two more while Thomas was on the receiving end of three touchdown receptions. Sophomore WR Ibraham MacNeil hauled in a touchdown while taking a big hit in the middle of the field and freshman RB Julian De La Paz carried in a touchdown run of his own as well. The
Bulldogs’ offensive line shined behind strong performances from Logan Harman, Matthew Wilkinson, Julian Torres, Jackson Satterfield, Brayden Franklin and Cade Carriger, and Damien Cadena made several key blocks in the secondary to get the Bulldogs into the end zone as well.
Bandera will look to build on Thursday’s performance as the JV team opens the regular season at 5:30 p.m. in Poteet Thursday night.

JV Grey
The JV Grey team competed against Llano Thursday night in Comfort with the Bulldogs’ showing improvement on both sides of the ball after their first scrimmage of the year against Ingram.
The Bandera offense moved the ball into scoring position twice on the of fensive portion of the scrimmage but was unable to capitalize and punch the ball into the end zone. Freshman RB Colton Hauer ran the ball hard between the tackles while QBs Benton Cloudt and James Bower connected with receivers West Cloudt, Dane Barnett, Beto Rodrigues, Gavin Garcia and Chris Hoffman to move the ball through the air.
Rodrigues hauled in an interception on the defensive end for the Bulldogs while Ben Marks and Benton Cloudt made an impact for the Bandera defense as well.
The JV Grey team will host San Antonio Southwest to open the season Thursday night with game time set for 5:30 p.m. at Bulldog Stadium.
