Medina Lake Cajun Festival wraps up 41st year

The 41st annual Medina Lake Cajun Festival was held Saturday, Sept. 24. Volunteers worked into the night as the music, food and culture of Louisiana’s Cajun Country descended upon the grounds of the Lakehills Community Center.
Cajun and Zydeco bands, including Ça Va Bien, Fa Tras Cajun Band, Joe Hall and the Louisiana Cane Cutters, Fa Tras Cajun Band, Joe Hall and the Louisiana Cane Cutters, La Recolte, and The Countrymen played music on two stages. Guests enjoyed homemade Cajun food including such as crawfish pies, crawfish etouffee, jambalaya, boudin, fried catfish and shrimp, red beans and rice, and bread pudding with whiskey sauce, and gumbo samples prepared for the Great Gumbo Cook-off.
Winners of the cook-off included Professional: Andrew Gonzalez - Chef Drew’s Spicy Gumbo, Ya Niemietz - Kountry Kitchen, Ma Harper - Creole Kitchen; Amateur: Byron Kirtland - Byron’s Bitchin’ Gumbo, Yvette Lanning - Tibby’s VooDoo Gumbo, Michael Koenig - Still Crawlin’; Culinary: James Madison Culinary High School, Lee High School, Clemens High School; People’s Choice: Ma Harper; and Showmanship: Scott and Stephanie Newcomer Calypso.
