Bulldogs tied for second in district race after 42-14 loss to Devine

By Chris Darus
The Bandera Prophet

The Devine Warhorses’ ground game pounded the Bulldogs defense and proved to be a little too much in a 42-14 loss Friday night in Devine.
After Bandera held the Warhorses to a three and out to open the game, the Bulldogs were posed to score inside the Devine 30 after an extended drive, but didn't convert on a fourth and short late in the first. Devine took advantage of that and scored on a 47 yard pass play with 1:22 left in the first.
Devine scored twice more in the first half and were leading 21-0 before Bandera got on the board with 5:11 left in the second on a Riley Haley to Alex Dirck 64 yard catch and run to score and a Beto Muzquiz PAT made it 21-7.
Devine rumbled back down the field to score with 2:12 left in the first half and with the scoreboard showing 28-7 and Bandera inside the red zone, the buzzer sounds to end the quarter.
Devine added two more scores, one in the third and one in the fourth and Bandera found the end zone on a Jesse Cardenas one yard rush with 2:10 left in the fourth quarter to make it a 42-14.
The Bulldogs didn't quit trying though as Bandera got the ball back with 18 seconds left in the game and the game ended with Bandera trying to score from the four yard line.
"While I am disappointed we weren't able to come away with a win, I couldn't be more proud of the way our guys fought until the last whistle," Coach Joel Fontenot Amedee said.
Bandera had 315 yards of offense, 202 of that through the air, and had quite a few chances to score, but turnovers on downs when Bandera was unable to convert on fourth and short, hobbled the offense.
The Devine defense held the Bulldogs to just 113 yards on the ground and kept Jesse Cardenas in check, holding him to just his second game under 100 yards rushing this season.
"We are so thankful to all of Bulldog Nation that came to Devine to support their Bulldogs.
We will continue to build a program that our community can be proud of and that will continue Friday as we celebrate our seniors and the 2002 state championship team at home versus YMLA," Fontenot-Amedee said.
With the loss, Bandera falls to 6-2 on the season and 1-1 in District 14-4AD2 play, sharing a three way tie for second place in district with Pearsall and YMLA, the Bulldogs opponent this Friday.
YMLA, 3-5 (1-1) created a bit of a stir Friday as they outlasted Carrizo Springs, 27-26, with a 328 yard offensive performance against the Wildcats.
This will be the final home game of the season as Bandera celebrates the 20th anniversary of the 2002 state championship football team as well as Football Senior Night.
Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
