The dedication of the Master Sergeant Rodney Lee Buentello Memorial Highway will take place at Bandera City Park on Thursday, Oct. 27, at noon.
State Representative Andrew Murr, who was essential to the process, will be in attendance, as well as local officials. A light lunch will be provided.
A collaborative effort, county commissioners and the City of Bandera passed resolutions supporting House Bill 2431, sponsored by Representatives Murr (R) and Ina Minjarez (D), and Senator Dawn Buckingham (R). It passed with unanimous votes May 28, 2021 and became effective Sept. 21, 2021.
On June 8, 2016, Buentello, of San Antonio, jumped into the river to save two teenagers who fell into the water while walking across the dam. He got the teenagers out, but was unable to reach the surface after and drowned. Buentello served 20 years in the Marines, completing four combat tours - one in Afghanistan and three in Iraq, and received two Purple Heart awards.
The seven-mile highway dedication begins at the bridge crossing the Medina River at Bandera City Park and stretches into Medina County.
“It gives us all an opportunity to recognize Master Sergeant Buentello's heroism, which should be recognized for all eternity here in Bandera,” Bandera County Attorney and project leader Janna Lindig said.
