The Bandera varsity basketball team finished up preparations for the season opener with a scrimmage against Comal Pieper Wednesday night with the Warriors edging the Bulldogs in an exciting 74-65 finish.
Bandera got off to a slow start in the first half, trailing Pieper 37-25 at the break, as the Warriors size advantage led to a large disparity in the rebounding battle through the first two quarters.
Bandera regrouped at the break, though, and battled back to give Pieper everything it could handle in the second half.
Senior Kayden Brown connected on a step-back three-point shot with 3:00 remaining in the third to make it a one-possession game as Bandera trailed just 46-43.
The Warriors regained momentum quickly and extended the lead back to
12, but the Bulldogs fought back again and trimmed the deficit to three when Brown stole the ball and connected on a floater to make it 60-57 Pieper with 4:50 remaining in the fourth.
Unfortunately, Bandera was unable to complete the comeback as the Warriors held on in the final minutes.
The scrimmage was a good tune-up for the Bulldogs before the season officially gets started, though, and there were several positives to carry into the regular season.
We started slowly against Pieper and I think their size intimidated our team a little bit in the first half. We challenged our guys in the locker room at halftime and they responded r eally well to that. We were a little shorthanded, but showed no quit and continued to battle back throughout the second half. It was a lot of fun to see our guys play together and for each other so early in the year, and we’re looking forward to building on that this week.
The Bulldogs officially open the regular season Tuesday night at home against Floresville. Fans are encouraged to wear white to match the Bulldogs in their white home uniforms for the season opener. The JV and freshmen play at 5 p.m. with the varsity tip-off at 6:15 p.m.
Bandera will be at home Friday night as well with San Antonio Fox Tech coming to town.
Friday night is Little Bulldog Night, and 2022 basketball campers will re ceive free admission with their basketball camp t-shirt. Campers will be honored at halftime of the varsity game, which is set to tip-off at 6:15 p.m.
Saturday will see the Bulldogs host their second annual Alumni Day featuring a nine-team, double-elimination 3-on-3 tournament. Games get started at noon.
There will be food available in the concession stand, and admission to the games is $2 for adults and $1 for children.
