Bulldogs hound the Owls in 71-57 win

By Brady Keane
Bandera Varsity Boys Basketball Head Coach

The Bandera varsity boys basketball team avenged an earlier tournament loss to Hondo, knocking off the Owls 71-57 Friday night in the final game before the start of District 27-4A play.
The game was a shootout in the first half with the lead changing han ds six times through the first two quarters before the Bulldogs were able to gain a 34-28 edge going in to the break.
Bandera never relinquished that lead in the second half and built it to as many as 18 points before cruising to a 14-point win down the stretch.
The Bulldogs knocked down 13-of-30 shots from the 3-point line, utilizing a fast pace of play to take down the Owls. Kayden Brown had a team-high 18 points while going 4-of-6 from deep downtown, Gavin Ortiz caught fire early and finished with 15 points after going 5-of-12 from long range and Eli Salas had 13 points while connecting on two 3-pointers. Alex Dirck was a difference maker off the bench for Bandera, scoring four points while grabbing 12 rebounds and bringing a lot of energy defensively.
Isaac Segura had six points, Salvador Enriquez had five, Noah Barnet t finished with four points and Cale Barnett and Corben Gonzales had three points each.
Bandera has now won four of its last five games against Hondo dating back to the 2020-2021 season and two straight games this year entering what will be a tough schedule in District 27-4A.
I am extremely proud of the way we played Tuesday against Devine and Friday against Hondo. We’re starting to play our best basketball at the right time. Our guys played with a lot of intensity on both ends of the court in a rivalry game Friday and it was a fun atmosphere in the gym.
Now, we have to continue to build on that effort as we start district play in what will be one of the most competitive 4A districts in the state. Six of the district’s seven teams (Fredericksburg, Wimberley, Davenport, Boerne and Bandera) enter district play with a winning record.
The Bulldogs will be off for five days before traveling to Rockport for the Rockport-Fulton Coach K Classic.
