Keep in Beat with the Bandera Library
By Mauri Guillén Fagan
Bandera Library Director
The Wheel of Time turns once again. January marches ahead and the library will be bustling with weekly events and programs for all ages and interests. Follow the library on social media or call the library and get added to our newsletter mailing list. It’s a once-a-month email that includes all the information for the month’s programming.
This Friday, Jan. 13, is the first author visit of 2023. Texas true crime author Pepper Anne will be at the library from 2:30 - 5:30 p.m. Pepper has written two books on Texas criminal extraordinaire Bob Leach. Come by and meet the author, get a copy of her book signed and learn more about this Wild West character come to life.
As a reminder, the library will be closed on Monday, Jan. 16, in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. We will reopen on Tuesday at 9 a.m. If fantastical fun and adventure is what you seek, look no further that the library’s Dungeons and Dragons group which meets every Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Downstairs Meeting Room. If you can’t make it in person, not to worry. The DM has set up a Discord so that you can play remotely. Just email [email protected] to get more information.
Next week we are kicking off a brand-new program for those who are interested in learning a new language or who are like me and need to brush off a few cobwebs. On Tuesdays and Thursdays starting Jan. 17, from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. join us for the new Spanish classes in the Texana Room. Each class will be for a donation, whatever you can, to cover the cost of materials. Aside from being able to communicate better with friends and neighbors, learning a new language does wonders for your brain. It’s a bit like going to the gym for your brain. Studies have shown people who study a new language later in life are building new neural pathways in their brain making new connections and improves memory. People who pick up foreign language also tend to develop Alzheimer’s and dementia about five years later than those who do not. So what are you waiting for? Come by the library and start working on those language skills no matter what your age.
The Bandera Kronkosky Public Library is open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Curbside service is available for checkouts and business services. Free Wi-Fi is available 24/7. Stay up to date with library events by following us on Facebook (@Bandera County Library), Instagram (@banderalibrary), or sign up for our monthly newsletter through our website at www.banderalibrary.org.
Happy tales, y’all.
