Bandera High School Cross Examination Debate team makes sweepstakes

By Emily E Huber
Bandera High School UIL Coordinator/Director of Forensics/Director of Theatre

The BHS Cross Examination Debate team had a fantastic day at the UIL district competition on Wednesday, Jan. 18. There were eight teams at competition, represented by Bandera, Boerne, Wimberley, Fredericksburg and Navarro.
After a long day of preliminary rounds, Bandera qualified to semifinals, finals and the consolation round. The senior team of Elijah Sarazua and Katelyn Mendez won first place against Wimberley in a 3-0 decision, qualifying them to compete at the UIL State contest in March.  This is their fourth year of debate and second state qualification.
Additionally, the freshmen team of Alyssa Ruch and Cassandra Steffler won third place honors, making them the alternate to state, in a 3-0 decision against Wimberley.
These accomplishments are the culmination of hundreds of hours of work, invitational tournaments on most Saturdays starting in September, immense talent, and incredible dedication.
I am beyond proud of this team and we can't wait for State. The UIL CX State meet will be held at the University of Texas at Austin, March 16 - 18.
