On Feb. 8, the Texas Fourth Court of Appeals affirmed a judgment dismissing the lawsuit that animal rights group PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), and a former PETA employee, brought against the Bandera Wrangler’s Hog Catch (now Bandera Wranglers Ham Rodeo).
It was concluded during the appellate court hearing that around 80 feral hogs caught by local ranchers, farmers or other people are loaned, donated or sold to the Bandera Wranglers. A team of two adults or teenagers may compete with the goal of catching and bagging a hog in a burlap sack, then dragging the bagged hog across a designated line in the fastest time possible. Young children also chase a group of piglets in an effort to touch one as quickly as possible.
“…a substantial risk of either an outbreak of zoonotic disease or increased violent crime [cannot be established] because of the hog catch,” the court’s opinion stated.
The Bandera Ham Rodeo will be held March 18. Money raised this year will be used to continue the rodeo each year. Additional funds, if available, will be allocated to local non-profits and charity drives during the holidays.
The Boys & Girls Club of Bandera County is raising money for daily programs at all three units, such as member of the week program, member of the month program and fun Friday programs by selling rubber pigs for the new Pig Toss event to be featured at The Bandera Ham Rodeo. The rubber pigs are for sale now: one pig for $5, or eight pigs for $20. Call the BGC for more information at 830-796-8109.
