Bandera Varsity Baseball Recap
On Tuesday, March 14, the Bandera Bulldogs hosted their first home game of the year when they welcomed the Wimberley Texans. In what has become a given on the field, the Bulldogs struck early and often. Bandera jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after Caleb Hohon led the game off with a single and moved around after walks to Randon Wheeler and Barrett Waid. Riley Haley drove in the first with a bases loaded walk of his own before freshman Benton Cloudt drove on in with a two-strike double to left-center field.
The Bulldogs were able to get three more across in the bottom of the 2nd after a few more walks by the Texans’ pitchers and an RBI Sac Fly by Zach Quesnot. Bandera was able to put another run on the board in the 3rd taking an 8-0 lead. That would be more than enough for Waid on the mound, who pitched 5.1 innings striking out six and only allowing one earned run, earning the win for the Dogs.
Hohon came in on relief to slam the door on Wimberley with a final score of 10-5. The Bulldogs pounded out nine hits on the afternoon with Wheeler and Cloudt leading the way with two each. The victory marked the first district win since April 2, 2019.
On Thursday, March 16, Bandera traveled to Davenport in the rain to take on the Wolves. Hohon, Wheeler and Waid started the game off with back-to-back hits, to take the early 2-0 lead in the first. Cameron Campbell was able to work a 3-up-3-down inning in the bottom half to set the tone for the rest of what would be a long game. Cloudt took the mound after Campbell and worked 3.2 innings, allowing only two earned runs.
The Bulldog defense, led by Wheeler at short stop, would make plays for the Bandera pitching staff. The Bulldog lead, which grew to 6-2 entering the bottom half of the 6th, slowly dwindled as the Wolves showed fight late in the game.
Hohon took over on the mound, and the Bulldogs defense continued to make great plays to stop Davenport’s offensive attack. The game moved all the way in to the 9th inning, when the Bulldogs put the game away for good.
Wheeler, Waid, Quesnot and Layne Bourgeios all had big hits, along with RBIs from Coleton Trenkelbach and Brady Trussell, to push the lead to 10-6, which would be the final score. The Bulldogs moved to 9-7 overall and 2-1 in district.
The ’23 Bulldogs have shown a lot of toughness and grit throughout the early stages of the season. They will be back in action at home on Friday, March 24, against Canyon Lake, after they travel to Fredericksburg on Tuesday, March 21, to take on the Billies.
