The American Legion Post 157 on Sunday invited and honored Vietnam era veterans and their families for a special meet and greet.
Following a special pinning, refreshments were served - including C-Ration “Morsels,” resources were shared, and stories were told.
On Wednesday, March 29, Vietnam Veterans National Day of Recognition, Rancho Cortez is hosting a Vietnam War Veterans Day Night Out. Activities include a one-hour horseback ride, wagon ride to feed cattle, dinner, campfire and breakfast. Vietnam veterans are free with a room choice. Call 830-796-9339 for more information.
The American involvement in the Vietnam War began Nov. 1, 1955, when the Military Assistance Advisory Group was deployed to train the Army of the Republic of Vietnam. On March 8, 1965, 3,500 U.S. Marines of the Ninth Marine Expeditionary Brigade came ashore on the beach of Da Nang, the first U.S. combat troops to enter the war.
By 1968, the United States had 548,000 troops in Vietnam. Following the signing of the Paris Peace Accords on Jan. 27, 1973, the last American combat troops left Vietnam on March 29, 1973. The war ended April 30, 1975.
According to the Vietnam Conflict Extract Data File of the Defense Casualty Analysis System, 58,220 Americans died in the war.
The American Legion Post 157 is at 205 12th Street, Bandera. For more information on their services and upcoming events, call 830-796-7528, email [email protected], or go to al157tx.org.
