The Lakehills and Bandera County Community once again gathered to support the 2023 annual Lakehills United Methodist Church Fish Fry and Silent Auction this past Saturday.
Although there had been a Fish Fry fundraiser the last three years, it was often a drive-through due to the pandemic, and so it was without an auction or the ability to join neighbors for a sit-down meal.
However, this year, the silent auction, as well as the full-service seating, returned. The auction, which is always vastly popular and well-attended by local members, returned as well with furniture, artisan projects, electronics, original artwork, and even a piano up for bid this year.
The crispy fish fry accompanied by cole slaw, beans, fries and finished off with a home-baked peach cobbler, was enjoyed by many.
The local business community and residents donated over 140 items to the silent auction, which benefitted the church’s many different social and giving programs hosted for the local community.
“This is one of our two big fundraisers we have each year along with the popular summer Chicken BBQ. All the money we raise at these two events and several smaller events helps support our community-oriented programs. These programs include the Monday dinners, our own food pantry, operation of the evacuation center (which was operated during the cold weather the last two winters), and other smaller community-focused events. We provide medical support with our own Wesley Nurse who is a registered nurse who works closely with the Methodist Healthcare System to get locals much needed medical care. We do this as an ongoing social program to help our neighbors. Another program is a direct support Pastor discretionary fund that allows us to help someone with an immediate need right here and right now,” Reverend Dawn Baird said. “As the founder of Methodism John Wesley stated, ‘the world is our Parish,’ and I believe that the local church and I are the Parish wherever we are, no matter where that is, and our motto is, ‘Y’all Are Welcome!’”
