Accepting the sudden resignations of two members, the City of Bandera Economic Development Corporation is going back to the drawing board to fill the vacant seats.
“People who apply need to have a stronger commitment,” BEDC Board Member Alan Arterbury said last Wednesday, regarding the resignations of former BEDC President Billy Greeson and former Board Member Barbara Poss last month.
Board Member and newly-appointed Board President Andrea Jankoski said as they look for new members, the applicants need to be screened and interviewed to ensure they are willing to put in the work and time necessary.
The board is also seeking to hire an administrative assistant. Jankoski suggested they begin with the applications already on file.
“I feel like we have a nice stack to go through,” she said.
Board Member Laura Devenport said after confirming they are all still interested in the position, someone would need to contact references, review social media posts and perform background checks.
“It’s an important job for us,” Arterbury said. “We need to probably have a special meeting.”
The board unanimously agreed to have a special meeting on Monday, April 17, at 6 p.m., to narrow down the list of candidates, followed by an executive session to conduct individual interviews.
~ In other business, board members reviewed the proposed wayfinding signs, which will be installed at Western Trail Heritage Park, the skate park and the new playground on Maple Street.
The 43.5 x 31.5 signs will feature various points of interest, including the Old Bandera Jail, the Bandera County Courthouse, the Frontier Times Museum, Bandera Natural History Museum, the O.S.T. Restaurant, Arkey Blue’s Silver Dollar, St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, the Hill Country State Natural Area, murals throughout the city, and more.
Board Member Lindsay Barnett said she felt more businesses should be featured on the map. Devenport said the signs were a work in progress, and the board needed to have approval from City Council members to move forward.
“This has been tweaked and tweaked and tweaked,” Devenport said. “We know there will be comments [from city council members] too. Then we will take it back and tweak it some more.”
The motion to recommend installing the signs carried three to two, with Barnett and Jankoski opposed.
Following the BEDC special meeting on April 17, the next regular board meeting will be Monday, April 24.
