Keep in Beat with the Bandera Library

By Mauri Guillén Fagan
Bandera Library Director

April is a special time of year. First of all, the springtime in the Hill Country is truly a blessing. I think it’s marvelous how we just collectively decide not to mow for a little bit so that we can see all the wildflowers. Of course, the bees and butterflies appreciate it too.  April is also when we celebrate poetry and humor in the book world. Poetry may seem a little intimidating, but I assure you there is something for everyone. Check out our display for Poetry Month featuring some of our favorites poems. On our featured wall, the staff selected their favorite funny books. A personal favorite of mine is Bill Bryson’s “A Walk in the Woods.” For anyone who may have been talked into doing a physical activity that you might not otherwise have done, this book is for you. Pick up a funny book and get a little laugh medicine.
Be sure to sign up for the NetSmartz Cyber Safety Presentation taking place on Friday, April 28, from 4 - 6 p.m., in the Downstairs Meeting Room. This presentation will give parents, grandparents, and caregivers the tools and knowledge they need to help their child navigate the internet safely. We teach our kids how to cross the road safely, and the internet is no different. Space is limited, so call the library at 830-796-4213 to register for the class.
On Saturday, April 29, we have two programs. Every Saturday morning, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. our Dungeons and Dragons group meets in the Downstairs Meeting Room. Roll for initiative and join in on the adventure. If you can’t meet in person, the DM also has a Discord for the group just email banderadnd@gmail.com to get connected. Or you can come out to our outdoor yoga class on the back patio. Yoga with Jacy will be on Saturday, April 29, from 10 - 11 a.m. Bring your own mat and a bottle of water. All levels are welcome. After class, come in to enjoy some light refreshments and maybe check out one of our books or DVDs on yoga in the library.
Have you got your Star Wars gear ready? Thursday, May 4, is Star Wars Day, and we are celebrating by hosting the first ever Star Wars Mini-Con at the library from 4 - 7 p.m. Come out and enjoy games, prizes, vendors, and even lightsaber training. Cosplay is heartily encouraged. It's going to be a laserblast.
There really is something for everything at the Bandera Library. Stay tuned to our social media including our blog, sign up for the monthly newsletter or join our Programs and Events Facebook group to stay on top of all the wonderful things happening.
The Bandera Kronkosky Public Library is located at 515 Main Street. We are open Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Curbside services are still available for checkouts and business services. Free Wi-Fi is available 24/7. Stay up to date with the library events by following us on Facebook (@banderalibrary), Instagram, TikTok (@banderalibrary), or sign up for our monthly newsletter through our website at www.banderalibrary.org.
