American Legion offers student opportunities

American Legion Post 410 in Lakehills urges high school students, and their parents, to avail themselves of the offer to attend Boys State in Austin this summer for the opportunity of a lifetime.
American Legion Boys State was founded in 1935 and is a respected, and selective, educational program of government instruction. Participants spend a week learning first-hand the rights, privileges and responsibilities of citizens. The activities include legislative sessions, court proceedings, law-enforcement presentations, assemblies, bands, choruses and recreational programs. The event will take place June 11-16. The participants will be housed in one of the halls at the University of Texas.
The boys must be juniors in high school, private school, or homeschool, and they must go into grade 12 next year. They are nominated by the school, with the assistance of the American Legion Post, who will nominate two young men. The applications must be filled out online and the deadline is May 1.
The American Legion Auxiliary sponsors Girls State, with the purpose to educate young women in the duties, privileges, rights, and responsibilities of American citizenship. They teach that a well-informed, intelligent, participating citizenry serves to protect and preserve our American institutions and democracy. Girls State is a mythical 51st State in which its citizens organize their own city, county, and state governments. The young citizens “learn by doing.”
The girls must meet the same requirements as the boys. However, the deadline for submitting registrations for Girls State this year is past.
