Bandera Legion is new Scout sponsor
“We are so honored and excited to take on this new mission for local youth. It’s a great match between several of our missions: Americanism and children and youth,” American Legion Post 157 Commander Susan Junker said.
Last week, all the documents were signed to make the Bandera American Legion Post 157 the new official sponsors of the Boy and Cub Scouts in Bandera County.
“Absolutely a great match,” Larry Crocker, scoutmaster of 20 years, said. “The Scout Oath states, ‘On my honor, I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey Scout Law, to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.’ This is very similar to the oath taken by military personnel and the preamble to the American Legion.”
Boy Scout Troop 146 has been in Bandera County since 1936. The scouts focus on developing character, life skills, leadership and teamwork.
This new partnership will also help the scouts financially, as a larger portion of the proceeds from nonprofit bingo conducted by the American Legion every Wednesday night can be directed to them. This year Post 157 volunteers will assist the Boy Scouts with parking at the Bandera Pro Rodeo Association Saturday night rodeo at Mansfield Park. Donations will be collected and support their summer training.
Troop 146’s summer “camp” will be an exceptional event: flying to the Florida National High Adventure Sea Base to learn to sail for a week. The Sea Base has been owned and operated by the Boy Scouts of America since 1979. The scouts have been working hard to prepare for and afford this trip. This will test much of the training and result in earning additional merit badges. The Eagle Scout award is always the goal: which can result in American Legion scholarships, as well as enhance a variety of education and job-related applications.
In addition to fundraising, the American Legion will assist in marketing, social media, and adult volunteers. Recruiting efforts are underway with educational visits and Hill Country Elementary on May 16. Recruiting has already occurred at Alkek Elementary. The scouts conduct meetings every Monday night, at 7 p.m., at the Bandera United Methodist Church.
If you are interested in donating or joining the Cub or Boy Scouts as an adult or youth, contact Crocker at 210-288-2597 ([email protected]) or the Legion at 830-796-7528 ([email protected]).
