Keep in Beat with the Bandera Library
By Mauri Guillén Fagan
Bandera Library Director
Poof – June is gone. Not really sure how that happened so quickly, but let’s just go with it.
July’s Monthly Book Fair will be on Saturday, July 1, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Come out and get all kinds of books, DVDs, audiobooks and more. Everything is available by donation and goes to support the collection development fund. So it’s a win-win for everyone.
Saturdays are also our Dungeons and Dragons club meets in the Downstairs Meeting Room, from 9:30 to 1 p.m. If you can’t meet in-person, you can also join the group on Discord. You can email the DM at [email protected] for the log in information.
The library will be closed on Tuesday, July 4, in honor of Independence Day. We hope that you have a fun-filled day celebrating the birth of our nation. Please stay cool in these very warm days. We will reopen Wednesday, July 5, at 9 a.m.
The monthly book club will be meeting on Thursday, July 6, at 10 a.m., at a different location. The group will meet at TJ’s The Old Forge to discuss “The Nurse’s Secret,” by Amanda Skenandore. This historical novel is based on the little-known history of America’s first nursing school. A young woman named Una is living on the streets of New York in the 1880s and escapes the clutches of the New York City police by conning her way into the nurse’s training program at Bellevue. Bellevue’s nursing school is based on the principles laid down by Florence Nightingale. The training is strict, challenging and the students are held to extremely high standards – only girls of good breeding should bother applying. Una is just getting her feet beneath when a patient’s death in her ward raises her suspicions. Does she keep her head low and ignore her instincts or should she speak up and risk being exposed?
We would like to take a few minutes to send a huge thank you to The Dough Joe for supporting the library’s summer reading challenge for teens and adults. We have had a tremendous response from the community. Kids and teens are reading and that benefits all of us. If you get a chance, stop by and thank them for supporting literacy in Bandera and maybe pick up a slice while you are there. Thank you Dough Joe!
Bandera Kronkosky Public Library is open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Curbside service is still available for checkouts and business services. Free Wi-Fi is available 24/7. Stay up to date with library events by following us on Facebook (@BanderaLibrary), Instagram, TikTok (@banderalibrary), or sign up for our monthly newsletter through our website at www.banderalibrary.org.
Happy tales, y’all.
