Keep in Beat with the Bandera Library
By Mauri Guillén Fagan
Bandera Library Director
August is National Breastfeeding Awareness Month, and the library is partnering with the State Department of Health to provide new moms information and support. Stop by the library and check out the library’s titles on our recommended reading wall. There are books to help moms going back to work, general information about breastfeeding and even books for parents to read to their children when a baby is on the way. Did you know workplace challenges remain the number one reason women stop breastfeeding earlier than they want or intend to? In fact, women in rural areas have the lowest rates of breastfeeding and the shortest times of breastfeeding than women in suburban and urban environments.
For this reason, one of the biggest factors in breastfeeding success is access to information and building maternal confidence. With that in mind, the library will be hosting our second annual Breast Feed-In event on Thursday, Aug. 10, at 10:30 a.m. We will have nurses and lactation consultants from WIC and the State Department here to share with local new or soon-to-be moms all the resources available to them to help with their breastfeeding journey.
August is also a great time to take a break from the heat in Texas. If you have been wanting to take a trip but need a little inspiration, check out the library’s featured wall displaying titles from our travel guide collection, books on the National Parks, some travel memoirs and a few great pieces of fiction based on travel. If you take a book from the library on vacation with you, be sure to post a “shelfie” and tag the library (#banderalibrary) so we can see where all our books journey!
Get your calendars out so you can save the date for the library’s first ever Family Space Camp coming up on Friday, Sept. 29, from 4 - 7 p.m. We will have “Space Stations” with fun activities for space education for people of all ages. NASA Engineer Teri Castillo will be joining by Zoom to answer questions about her work for NASA’s Artemis program ensuring the astronauts and the space vehicles are safe during missions to the moon and beyond. You’ll also get to try out telescopes fitted with solar filters and learn all about how to view the upcoming solar eclipses safely. Get your Spaceport stamped to earn free pairs of solar viewing glasses and enter your name in a drawing for a door prize. It will be fun for all ages.
Bandera Kronkosky Public Library is open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Curbside service is available for checkouts and business services. Free Wi-Fi is available 24/7. Stay up to date with library events by following us on social media (@BanderaLibrary), or sign up for our monthly newsletter through our website at www.banderalibrary.org.
Happy tales, y’all.
