Lakehills Library holds solar eclipse class

The Bandera Prophet
On Sept. 16, a dozen people attended a class teaching everything you ever wanted to know about solar eclipses and why they are so exciting. The event was held in the conference room of the Lakehills Area Library and was presented by Library Director Dianna Landes.
Because the class is for all ages, a few kiddos as young as 4 attended with their parents, and shared the space with a few senior citizens.
The presentation began with a couple of games to demonstrate what happens when the moon casts its shadow on the planet. Landes then showed the paths of our future eclipses and remarked that NASA called the square where the two paths cross “the square of awesome.” That square on the map puts Bandera County in the bull’s eye.
Landes offered more information on the upcoming eclipses and said our local authorities recommend buying food and gas about two weeks before each eclipse. They expect Bandera County will swell to 80,000 for the Oct. 14 annular eclipse and even more for the April 8 total eclipse.
Every attendee received a pair of solar viewing glasses, which can be used for both eclipses.
Due to the popularity of these events, the Lakehills library will host this class again on Saturday, Sept. 30, at 11 a.m. Sign up at the front desk or call the library at 830-510-2777.
The library is located at 7200 FM 1283. While there, check out all the other events and services held at the library every month.
Their hours are Monday, Wednesday, Friday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Tuesday, Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
