The Frontier Times Museum is welcoming author Mike Lowrie to celebrate the publication of his latest novel on Thursday, Sept. 28. Based on actual events and true Texas history, House of De Zavala – The Legacy of the Black Heart Stone is a high-octane thrill ride through Texas and northern Mexico, fraught with danger and punctuated by humor as dry as the West Texas desert.
This exciting tale follows Luis De Zavala, a rookie archaeologist and direct descendant of one of the Founding Fathers of the Republic of Texas, Lorenzo De Zavala. Luis will do whatever it takes to find and protect some of Texas’ most valuable historic artifacts, including the fabled Black Heart stone. To succeed, he must stay one step ahead of the law, as well as an angry Mexican drug cartel and a rival archaeologist with questionable ethics. Lowrie weaves this tale with a vibrant cast of Texas characters drawn from real life and colorfully enhanced by the author’s imagination.
“Texas is known for its tall tales and amazing true stories. Mike Lowrie skillfully weaves both into a captivating yarn about treasure hunting and the devastating cost of greed. Luis De Zavala is a proud descendant of Lorenzo De Zavala, a founding father of Texas. Like his ancestor, Luis is not one to back down from a good fight and for standing up for what he feels is right. A story by his grandfather, Sergio De Zavala, of lost Aztec gold and the plane crash death of the Texas dentist who discovered the gold leads Luis into becoming an archaeologist, determined to dig up not only the past but the truth. Lowrie brings you on a journey that spans across Texas and into the borderlands of Mexico as Luis, with his brother and beautiful fiancé, Amelia, stays one step ahead of the authorities on their quest to unravel the mysteries of a legendary treasure and the curses that follow those who desire it,” museum Executive Director Rebecca Norton said.
Lowrie, a former cowboy, oilfield roughneck, lawman, wagon master, and trick roper and horse trainer in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, is a master storyteller. He will be available, from 6 – 8 p.m., at the museum to sign copies of his book and to regale the audience with fascinating Texas tales. Libations and refreshments will be served and the book will be available for purchase at the event. This event is free and open to the public. The Frontier Times Museum is located at 510 13th Street, Bandera.
