The Bandera cross country teams traveled to Round Rock late last week and competed against some tough competition at the McNeil Invitational. The Lady Bulldogs finished eighth out of 29 teams while the Bulldogs 16th out of 35 teams.
Emily Presa led the way on the girls side with a 38th place finish individually while Carlye Niccum finished just behind her in 39th. Merry Robinson was 56th, Trinity Butler was 57th and Madi Lewis rounded out the top five by placing 81st individually. Other finishers included Riley LaLanne (102), Lori King (112), Jazlyn Dickerson (115), Kierstin Brown (117) and Layney Bowman (118) with a field of more than 250 runners in the race.
It was King’s first time competing at the varsity level after earning a Top 7 spot. Presa, Niccum, Butler and Brown all ran faster at Old Settlers Park than they had previously while the rest of the team competed on the course for the first time.
“The girls have really been working hard and have been extremely disciplined in regards to the small details of their routines, and that’s important,” Girls Head Coach Brooke Ashcraft said. “My seniors have really been stepping up to lead our younger and new athletes on the team, and I am very proud of each of them.”
On the boys side, Bandera’s 16th place team finish was fueled by a 59th place individual finish from junior Ruben Ruiz-Palacios. Senior Mariano Casas was the team’s No. 2 in 70th place while running his fastest time of the season (18:25). Sophomore Fili Quintero also ran his best 5K time of the year, finishing No. 3 for the team and 76th overall.
Sophomore Ayden Sarver had a 5K PR of 19:34, and other finishers included Zach Goodin (80), Nino Martinez (114), Hudson Jackson (116), Albert Robinson (117), Kyle Moore (167) and Ben Adamietz (184).
Boys Head Coach Sam Farrell said the race, featuring almost 300 runners, got out to a fast start with the entire team finishing the first mile in under 5:30.
“This is great experience going into postseason races,” Farrell said. “Those tend to get out fast and you have to roll with it. It was a great opportunity for us, and the guys are even more hungry going into our last meet before district.”
The Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs will be back in action this Saturday, Sept. 30, at the Poth Invitational. Bandera will then host the district meet on Oct. 12.
