The Bandera JV football team picked up a game during its originally scheduled open week and dominated San Antonio Southwest in a 42-8 finish Thursday night at Southwest ISD Stadium.
After receiving the opening kickoff, the Bulldogs marched right down the field and took an early lead on a 1-yard touchdown run from freshman quarterback Dalton Parks. Freshman Caleb McKenzie forced a fumble on the Dragons’ ensuing offensive possession that was recovered by freshman James Goldberg, and Bandera needed just five plays to get in the end zone a second time on a 44-yard touchdown pass from Parks to Goldberg.
Freshman Miguel Avalos, who was a perfect 7-for-7 on extra point attempts in the game, added the PAT to give the Bulldogs a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Freshman linebacker Jonah Klein made a tackle for loss on 4th down to get Bandera the ball back again, and the Bulldogs scored in three plays after a 49-yard touchdown run from freshman Breydan Gherman.
McKenzie recovered a fumble on the first play of the Dragons’ next possession, and Gherman scored on a 12-yard touchdown run to make it to 28-0 at the half.
The Bulldogs added another 14 points in the second half thanks to a 55-yard touchdown run from Gherman and a 1-yard touchdown run from freshman Isaac Zamora, who also recovered a fumble from his position at inside linebacker.
Bandera finished with 415 yards of offense as Gherman had eight carries for 172 yards and three touchdowns while Zamora (7 carries, 84 yards, 1 TD) and Parks (4 carries, 52 yards, 1 TD) also contributed in the run game. Parks completed six of eight passes for 107 yards and a touchdown with Jaymin Klein (2 catches, 15 yards), Jonah Klein (1 catch, 7 yards), Breydan Gherman (1 catch, 30 yards), James Goldberg (1 catch, 44 yards, 1 TD) and Ruffin Scartocci (1 catch, 11 yards) led the way on the perimeter.
The Bulldogs’ JV team improved to 5-0-1 on the season and will look to continue its push toward a district championship when District 14-4A Division II play gets underway this week. Bandera will host Pearsall at 5 p.m., Thursday.
The varsity football team, which was on its open week after defeating Robstown 42-35, will also open district play this week against the Pearsall Mavericks. Bandera will travel to Pearsall Friday night, with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
